The Growth of the Reformation

The reformation was a great movement that spread throughout Europe. The spread of Luther’s ideas changed a lot of European politics. A lot of different protestant movements developed quickly throughout Europe. The reformation ideas started to spread by trade routes, priests and worshippers, and printing. Printing was a big help to the spread of the reformation.
Most of Luther’s ideas spread by trade routes, priests, and worshippers. But most of all, his ideas spread by printing. Printers began making bibles in local languages, or non-Latin bibles. The church authority was threatened when more and more people could read bibles. Reason behind this was because the Catholic Church thought that all religious teachings should be through Clergy.
European peasants sought better pay, living conditions, and rights, sparking fracases and small wars. Most people believed Luther’s ideas of freedom meant God’s help for revolt, and Luther condemned such revolts. But most revolts were not successful. Luther’s ideas lead to people thinking of the bible in many different ways than before.
Another way the reformation spread was because people started to create many other religions. A lot of these happened in places all over Europe. John Calvin, a French reformer, created a belief system known as Calvinism. John Calvin believed in predestination, which is that god chose people for salvation before birth, that some people were born condemned. King Henry VIII of England created the religion of Anglicism after the Catholic Pope did not allow him to divorce his wife. Anglicism kept a lot of the Catholic beliefs, but denied the power of the Pope.

There were three main reformers. There was Erasmus, Martin Luther, and Wycliffe. They started in the 14th and 15th century. Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch priest criticized the pope for neglecting Christian values. Also he criticized reformers for trying to divide the church.
John Wycliffe, an English priest was another reformer. He questioned the pope’s right to tax and make appointments without asking king.
Martin Luther was the best reformer. He wrote the 95 theses which were things that he thought the church should fix. In the 95 theses he wanted to debate ideas such as selling of indulgences. Also he thought the bible is a source of religious truth and clergy interpretation is not needed.
Plus, he said salvation can be gained only through faith in Christ
